MLS on National TV

Posted in Dynamo, US Soccer with tags , on August 16, 2009 by geojock

So I summarized all MLS games on ‘National TV’.  This includes ESPN, Fox Soccer, and TeleFutura.

NAME National TV Games Media Market Rank
Chicago Fire 15 3
LA Galaxy 15 2
New York Red Bulls 13 1
D.C. United 12 7
Houston Dynamo 12 11
Chivas USA 11 2
Columbus Crew 10 34
San Jose Earthquakes 8 4
FC Dallas 7 6
Seattle Sounders FC 7 13
Colorado Rapids 6 18
Kansas City Wizards 6 27
New England Revolution 6 8
Real Salt Lake 2 30

You can draw you own conclusions, but it looks like MLS has a decent formula of team quality and market size.  Hate to see a team like NYRB get 13 games, but hey, they are in New York.

Win the crowd, Win the game.

It is game day folks. USA vs Mexico. 3PM CST on Mun2.

There has been talk about the altitude, the smog, and the new found youth of Mexico. I want to talk about he fans at Azteca. Everyone knows how they can make the game tough for opponents.

Mexican fans, however, have no problem expressing their displeasure with their home side. The key for the USA is to make Mexico look bad for their fans. That doesn’t necessarily mean scoring early goals, but ball control. Not easy to do versus Mexico.

The Gold Cup win eased up a little pressure from Mexico, but if Mexico looks bad early, the fans could change just as they did in 1997. Nothing helps more than 105k fans booing the home team. How about Mexicans ‘ole’ing for the USA? It’s happened before and the USA got away with their only point ever that day.

Telemundo won’t give up English Rights for USMNT vs Mexico

Did you enjoy the USA National Team’s run in the Confederations Cup?  Are you looking forward to the USA’s toughest match of the year, versus Mexico in Mexico City?  Well have fun watching on Telemundo in Spanish or Mun2 in English.  Yeah, no Fox Soccer Channel, no ESPN.

Much has already been written so I won’t go on.  I just wanted to give it some pub. on my widely read and massively influential blog.

You can’t tell me there won’t be a big audience for this.  The first leg of the qualifier shattered TV view records and this was before the USA’s performance and hype after the Confed. Cup.

Dynamo Lose, USA Tie, Holden Becomes A Star

Despite all the good excuses the Dynamo have for losing, they still lost.  I know they were out 5 regulars, playing on turf, and were the victim of horrible call, but the Dynamo still leave Seattle with zero points.  Maybe the worst of it all, Patrick Ianni scored.
The USMNT didn’t look that impressive, but the Gold Cup has made Stuart Holden a star.  I have always loved the guy but thought he was a little overhyped; I know now that he’s the real deal. In the words of Boobie Miles: “Now hype is something that’s not for real. I’m all real.”

Soccer Saturday

Excited about great day of sports?  I know I am.  Houston Dynamo match up versus the Seattle Sounders in one of my most anticipated of year.  Seattle brings a good team and great home atmosphere.

Following the Dynamo/Seattle kickoff at 3:00pm, the United States National Team takes on Haiti at 6:00pm.  Perfect timing unlike last week week when the two squads kicked off at the same time.  Unfortunately, the ESPN game of the week (Chicago Fire Vs Columbus Crew), kicks of at 7:00pm and will conflict.

Still looking for more?  Once the soccer day is over, try UFC 100.
